A diastema (plural diastemata) is a space or gap between two teeth. Many species of mammals have diastemata as a normal feature, most commonly between the incisors and molars. Diastemata are common for children and can exist in adult teeth as well. Diastemata are primarily caused by imbalance in the relationship between the jaw and the size of teeth. If the labial frenulum (lip tissue) pulls, it can also push the teeth apart and cause a diastema between the center of the two front teeth.
CLOSING THE GAP BETWEEN TEETH
Tooth Bonding:Composite bonding offers a relatively easy method of closing small gaps between teeth. With bonding, a tooth-colored material called composite resin is bonded to the teeth to change their shape and color. How long the bonding lasts varies between patients, averaging three to seven years. Since the composite resin is micro-mechanically bonded to the tooth, it’s very secure. We can match a wide range of tooth colors and the end result blends in perfectly when the proper shade is selected.
Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain veneers can often be used to close wider gaps and they are especially useful when the spacing or shape of several front teeth is uneven. Veneers are fingernail-thin shells that are placed on the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance.
There are several types of porcelain veneers, some as thin as a contact lens, that can transform your smile and cover stains, chips or misaligned teeth. Unlike crowns, veneers usually require less tooth preparation and removal of natural tooth structure.
You can also close the gap between your teeth by using braces to move your teeth into their correct position. Braces are an excellent choice when your teeth are healthy and attractively shaped, but widely spaced or crooked. Braces help your teeth come together properly by eliminating the gaps and correctly aligning the teeth. This way your teeth are in harmony with your smile.
